“Food is our first medicine,” reminds Sylvie Beljanski, a health and wellness educator and author of Winning The War on Cancer. “Every time we decide to put something healthy in our mouths, we will nurture our cells, and we save ourselves from the temptation of eating something unhealthy.”
Although the amounts of minerals and vitamins in these drinks are small, there is no doubt that they help you in the long run if you know how to take them and when to take them. What do I mean by that? These wellness drinks full of nutrients need to be ingested before any meal or other drink like coffee. If we want our body to absorb the calcium, the iron, and other minerals, and vitamins we need to eat or drink them first. I notice that every time I have a green juice in the morning my body doesn’t crave coffee as much, and trust me, I always need coffee.
I must say, consuming these drinks doesn’t mean you should not eat your greens, no no no. You need greens in your diet, they are a great source of fiber and other goodness, these wellness drinks are just a complement in your diet.
Here are the 3 wellness drinks you can’t miss, and you will love:
Anti-Inflammatory Shot
2 oranges
2 lemons
1-inch fresh turmeric or tsp of powder
1/8 tsp of black pepper
1/8 tsp of cayenne pepper
Why is this so great? We know the oranges and lemons are great source of vitamin C and help us to produce collagen, hello wrinkles. I would like to talk about the turmeric instead, this spice is like having gold in your kitchen. This root reduces soreness and inflammation. It has been used for centuries and it is known for its medicinal properties. Black pepper is another condiment that we underestimate, we think it’s there to accompany the salt. However, black pepper is truly a gem. It contains vitamins, minerals, it’s rich in Potassium and Magnesium. It is an anti-bacterial and it help us to fight the cold and nasal congestion. Finally, cayenne pepper, another ingredient we have at home and it has anti-inflammatory properties and more.
Next time you use these condiments at home, you wont see them the same way.
Hangover Helper
3 stacks of celery
½ of large cucumber
½ cup of coconut water
½ jalapeno, seeded and chopped
¼ tsp of Himalayan salt
This is probably one of the best after party drinks. The cucumber contains a large percentage of water to keep you hydrated, celery help you to eliminate toxins and battle water retention. Coconut water is a great source of potassium which helps us keep our organism hydrated, the jalapeno contains capsaicin which has natural pain reliever properties, and finally Himalayan salt which contains a less process form of sodium, a mineral which helps maintain fluid balance.
Super Phyto
¾ of water
3 cups chopped of Kale
½ cup of parsley
2 large chopped carrots
2 cloves of garlic
Let’s start by what does Phyto mean? The word Phyto comes from the Greek and it means plant. Phyto nutrients are chemicals produced by plants. We are all aware of Kale being considered a brainfood and rich in vitamins and folate. Parsley contains a natural chemical called apigenin which may be used in future non-toxic cancer treatments. Carrots as we all know they are a rich source if beta-carotene, a compound your body changes into vitamin A, which helps keep your eyes healthy, it is known to lower LDL cholesterol and strengthen the immune system. And lastly, my favorite ingredient that can never miss in my kitchen, garlic. Garlic contains antioxidants known to fight free radicals. Without getting to technical here, free radicals are the cause of aging, DNA alterations, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes among other things.
Making these drinks in the morning should not cause any trouble, as we all have if not all the ingredients, most of them. I hope you like them and let me know what you think.
