The Benefits of Working out

Updated: Aug 6, 2020

As Mayo clinic explains, exercising daily or at least regularly provide multiple benefits to the body. Not only the body improves aesthetically, but also gets stronger, builds muscle, and increases endurance. It is no secret when your heart and your lung health improve, the regular tasks become easy to do. But what happens in your brain? Why do we get happier when we exercise and sort of addicts? It is quite simple, exercise improves our mood, it gives us more energy, promotes better sleep and what is better improves your sex life, in most cases.

You are probably asking, how a simple activity can do all that? Well, when we exercise, we release a few chemicals associated with feeling happy, confident, capable, less anxious, and even less physical pain. Those chemicals are endorphins, dopamine, adrenaline, and endocannabinoid. Also, the better we feel and look the more confidence we get; it is like magic.

But why is it so hard to exercise and to build a routine? The answer is, it takes commitment, and discipline. It is said that it takes 28 days to create a habit, think about it, it takes almost a month to change your life, but it takes seconds to sabotage that idea. We create bunch of excuses, work, kids, family, Netflix, but we do not realize that we are not just putting aside a workout, but our health and self-esteem. My mom used to tell me, what you do in your 20s it shows in your 30s and you feel it in your 40s, and I wish I would have done a lot of things differently, like starting my yoga practice earlier, or have better habits. Oh well, the true is, it is never too late to start. No matter how old a person is, if someone is alive that person should feel encouraged and confident to make changes.

So now what? You feel eager to start, you buy new sneakers, workout clothes, chocolate protein, after workout drinks, etc. Then, you realize you don’t even know what you like, gyms are overwhelming, half of the machines you can’t even understand how to operate them, you would like to run but you have bad knees and the list goes on and on. Start simple, maybe try free trials at local studios or gyms.

Try different platforms like Groupon or Classpass to browse around places. Understand what you like and, what you do not like. A common mistake is to commit to something you tried once or twice and because you are super eager to make a change, you are stuck with a membership you will hate until the end. Another recommendation is to find a friend, your partner, or a group that can motivate you and make you feel committed.

In the meantime, if you feel ready to make changes in your life, I invite you to take my classes. Shoot me an email, and we can schedule a private yoga session to go over the basics or you can jump right into the live sessions I provide online.

Whatever you decide to do, I hope it’s for the best of your physical and mental health.
